Do you need a permit for a fence in Salem?
Usually not a building permit. Per the City of Salem’s guidelines on work exempt from permit, fences built of wood, wire mesh or chain link under 7 feet that aren’t acting as a swimming pool barrier are exempt from the building permit requirement. That exemption covers the permit only — Salem’s zoning height limits still apply: 4 feet in front yard areas, 6 feet in side/rear yards, up to 8 feet on interior lines that don’t border a street.
